Team Elrod July 2016 Season Update
With an end to a busy month of June and July the team Elrod drivers are headed to St. Louis International Speedway for the 5th of 6 NHRA Lucas Oil series divisional races.
The team reached the final round in their last weekend race of June, with team driver Jacob Elrod getting a runner up at the NHRA division 3- Lucas Oil divisional in the very competitive super gas 9.90 class.
Coming off the 2015 NHRA super gas world Championship driver Jacob Elrod said "it feels great to reach the finals, we've had some great rounds of racing in 2016, going lots of rounds at several races already this year. It meant a lot to get past the semifinals."
Following the NHRA division 3 race in Joliet Illinois, the team then traveled to Grand Bend, Ontario Canada for the first two races of their IHRA division 3 schedule.
Taking all 6 cars into Canada, the team battled their way into multiple semi final and final round appearances.
Team driver Patrick Forster reached the semi finals in Sundays nitro jam
- quick rod 8.90 category losing to his team mate Tony Elrod. Tony Elrod would go on to the finals in his Carrs Finishing Touch - of Howell Mi, dragster to take the runner up position against his friend and home track competitor Ken Hebert from Canada. Tony also drove the Sunoco and #KNfilters dragster in a quarter finals finish against his brother Jacob in Sundays Top dragster field.
Continuing his Joliet success, Jacob Elrod drove his 2014 American Race Cars dragster to a final round appearance earning runner-up in the competitive top dragster category.
Not finished with his weekend, Jacob drove the same American Race Car, backed by Sunoco and KN filters to a semifinal finish on Sunday. Jacob drives double duties at each event the team competes in and would go on to take his 92 Corvette-Championship Roadster to win the Sunday 9.90 super rod category.
Returning to the United States from a great start to their IHRA season, the team would travel the next weekend to Keystone Raceway Park in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. This would be events three and four on the IHRA division 3 tour.
Once again the team's family dynamic, hard work and support from great team members like KN filters, Hoosier tire, Sunoco race fuels, Quick Fuel Technology carburetors and fuel pumps, Penn grade 1 racing oil, Moser engineering, DJ safety and American Race Cars delivered another successful weekend.
With the competition increasing their efforts against the Ohio based team- Jacob Elrod would find final round appearances on back-to-back days. Taking his 92 Corvette to win 9.90 super rod on Saturday night, Jacob would find his groove with a perfect light in the final round.
Leaving the starting line .400 on the tree and taking the margin of victory at the finish line by .0005 seconds, or about 1.38 inches. Jacob would then go on to runner-up in top dragster on Sunday.
One unique aspect of drag racing is you find so many teams made up of family members. Team Elrod races, travels and vacations together. The team chose the following weekend off, after Pittsburgh to celebrate the High School graduation and College acceptance for two members of the family - Brittanie and Ciara Elrod.
The family traveled together for 6 days in the sun and sand in the Dominican Republic. Returning to the US and back to their NHRA division 3 schedule to compete at National Trail Raceway in Columbus Ohio. Riding his hot streak Jacob Elrod once again reached the final round in his Corvette Roadster. This time winning in the final round of the 9.90 super gas category. "This was the right time for us to get a win. After last year's championship success in super gas, this win now means so much to our team and family," Jacob would go on to say.
he latest win would give Jacob a small lead in division 3 NHRA super gas points. Jacob is also leading the IHRA division 3 super rod points, and is currently in second place in IHRA top dragster points.
The team is definitely hitting its stride at the middle of the IHRA and NHRA seasons. Finding a winning combination by pairing their KN filters carbon fiber hood scoops and KN air filters to the Quick fuel carburetors on every motor has proved to be a dynamic combination for the Supreme octane-Sunoco race fuels the team runs. Team owner and four-time IHRA World Champion, Dave Elrod would say "we couldn't do this without the support of our sponsors like Hoosier Tires, Milodon, Moser Engineering and PennGrade1. They're as important members of our team as our family that makes up the crew."
