Repko Wins a Barn Burner At Hickory Motor Speedway

(Newton, NC - September 3^rd, 2018)  Hickory Motor Speedway honored a racing legend on Saturday night with the running of the 42nd Annual Paramount Auto Group Bobby Isaac Memorial presented by Black’s Tire & Auto Service. The pits and stands were full of competitors and fans who were there to remember the Catawba County native who set records on the racetrack and on the Bonneville Salt Flats, some of them still standing to this day.

Leading off the night’s festivities would be the Hickory Vintage Racers as they would do battle for 25 laps. Bill Powell would turn the fast lap, somewhat fittingly in the #71 Bobby Isaac themed hot rod while Robert Webb in the #6 would start from the outside pole. Powell would take the early lead with Robert Webb close in tow. With the famous orange #71 out front it almost looked like it did back in the 60s and 70s when Bobby Isaac was putting it on the field. Powell would prove too strong on the night and grab the win with Robert Webb in 2nd. Mackie Webb in #16 would finish 3rd while Tom Fenn in the #83 would finish 4th.

Next up would see the Paramount Auto Group Limited Late Models in action for 50 laps and Round #9 of the Paramount Kia ‘Big 10’ Chase for the Championship. Vince Midas in the #14 would turn the quick lap in qualifying to take the top spot with the #12P of Gage Painter to his outside. Points leader Pat Rachels in the #34 and Leland Honeyman in the #4 would make up row two for the start. Midas and Painter would battle side by side for several laps until Painter would pull ahead. A caution at lap 6 would bunch the field for the restart and see Painter pull ahead with Taylor Gray in the #15 challenging for second. A few laps later the caution would fly once again for Midas car as it was stopped on the backstretch. Midas would come to pit road and rejoin the field in the rear after repairs. Painter and Gray would battle fiercely for the top spot until Gray would finally nose ahead. Painter would face a challenge from the #22 of Brandon Lemke for second as the duo would mix it up for several laps contact in turn three would send Painter for a long slide but the 13 year old would make the save like a seasoned veteran. Lemke would set his sights on the leader and with just 10 laps to go Gray’s engine would go sour, changing his and Lemke’s fortunes. Lemke would catch and pass Gray bringing Painter with him. Lemke would hang on for the win and celebrate with the custom made hardware in victory lane. Painter would grab 2nd with Midas working his way back through the field for 3rd. Pat Rachels in the #34 would finish 4th and Leland Honeyman in the #4 would have a strong run finishing 5th after having to start in the rear.

The Cosmo Motors Street Stocks would roar to life next for 30 action packed laps of racing. Jeff Sparks in the #7 would turn the hot lap in qualifying to take top spot on the start with Troy DeMarmels in the #18 starting to his outside. Sparks would jump to the early lead with DeMarmels facing a challenge from Kevin Eby in the #03. DeMarmels would finally pull ahead and give chase to Sparks for the top spot. A caution would fly as Drew Cox in the #21 would come to pit road as flames would roll out from under the rear end. The safety crew would extinguish the flames and Cox would exit safely. The restart would see Sparks once again drive to the top spot with DeMarmels close behind. Sparks would drive on to the win with DeMarmels taking 2nd. Eby would grab 3rd, Marshall Sutton in the #64 would finish 4th, and Mark Whitten in the #77 would finish 5th.

The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series would roll off next for the main event, 150 laps and the 42nd Annual Paramount Auto Group Bobby Isaac Memorial presented by Black’s Tire & Auto Service. Ryan Repko in the #14 would win his first Hickory Motor Speedway race one week earlier and carry the momentum through taking the pole position with the fast lap for the premier division while Jagger Jones in the #88 driving for JR Motorsports would turn the second fastest lap and start from the outside pole position. Four-Time National Champion and 2018 National points leader Philip Morris in the #01 would start from the third spot with Justin Crider in the #7 starting to his outside. Repko would move to the early lead but his Reynolds Racing Chassis teammate Morris would move to the top spot on lap 8. Caution would fly on lap 9 as the #23 of Terry Brooks would spin. Heavy contact between the #9 of Sam Mayer and the #57 of Justin Carroll would bring out the caution on lap 18. After several trips to pit road the decision was made by the crew to park Mayer’s JR Motorsports ride. The green would fly once again on lap 26 with Morris and Repko battling it out for the top spot. Repko would win the round and take the lead on lap 29. Morris would make his way back to the top spot on lap 35. Lap 47 would see the #9 of Charlie Watson move to the top three after passing Crider. Watson would quickly dispose of Repko and set his sights on the leader Morris. Watson would make the move for the lead on lap 59. Ryan Vasconcellos in the #10 would spin bringing out the caution on lap 60. The green flag would fly once again on lap 72 with Watson leading. Lap 74 would see the caution fly as contact between Repko and Austin McDaniel in the #12 in turn two would carry on to turn three and see McDaniel spin. Racing action would resume on lap 79 with Watson and Morris battling side by side. Morris would nose ahead on lap 81. Watson would move back to the lead on lap 84 with a pass on Morris. This battle was raging between Watson and Morris. The caution would fly once again on lap 88 when Brooks would spin on the backstretch. As the race resumed so did the action with Watson and Morris slugging it out once again for the top spot. Contact in turn one between the leaders would send Morris spinning and into the outside wall and Watson with a tire down. The restart would see Repko battling with the #2 of Austin Green for the lead. Repko would take the lead and Green would have mechanical issues and come to pit road. The skies would open and bring out the red flag for a short rain on lap 130. When track drying was complete and green flag action returned Repko would drive back to the point, but face challenges from past Hickory Motor Speedway Track Champion Ryan Millington in the #17 and Matt Leicht in the #2. Repko would pull ahead as the race would be for second and on back. A hard crash on lap 147 would see the #18 of Ty Gibbs bury his car into the tire barrier in turn one. Gibbs would walk away on his own power but was visibly upset. The restart would find Repko side by side with another Hickory Motor Speedway Track Champion with McDaniel for the lead. Repko would nose ahead on lap 149 and drive on to take the checkered flag on lap 150. McDaniel would finish 2nd with Leicht finishing 3rd. Chris Hudspeth would finish 4th with Jagger Jones in the #88 finishing 5th.

Closing out the night’s action would be the always exciting One Design Super Trucks and 35 laps of action. Charlie Neill in the #26 would take the pole position in qualifying with Sheflon Clay in the #15 to his outside. Dakota Slagle in the #13 and Allen Huffman in the #51 would make up row two for the start. Neill and Clay would put on a great battle for the top spot going side by side for the first 5 laps until Clay would finally nose ahead. The caution would fly on lap 5 as Huffman would spin coming off turn four. The restart would see Clay to the lead until lap 12 when Neill would make his bid for the lead. Neill would hold on to the lead and drive on to the victory. Slagle would finish 2nd with Clay coming home in 3rd. Huffman would finish 4th and Josh Stark I. The #39 would finish 5th.

NASCAR Whelen All American Series racing action returns to the Birthplace of the NASCAR Stars next week with a full slate of competition in store Sheetz Night at the Races presented by Gaston Rentals.
