Millington Sweeps Pair

(Newton, NC – June 25, 2018)    Engines roared to life once again at the Birthplace of the NASCAR Stars as Hickory Motor Speedway welcomed Woodforest Bank for their Night at the Races.

The NASCAR Whelen All American Series Late Models would pound the pavement first at the famed 3/8 mile oval for race number one of two for them on the night. Cole Glasson in the #5 would top the charts in qualifying and start for the pole position while Evan Swilling in the #18 would start to his outside. 2017 Hickory Motor Speedway Track Champion Ryan Millington in the #15 would start inside of row two with Chris Hudspeth in the #28 to his outside. Glasson would nose ahead early but Swilling would soon make the move around to the top spot. Swilling would hold the advantage for several laps, but would eventually see pressure from Millington with 10 laps to go. A caution at lap 32 would bunch the field for a restart and set up a great battle for the win. Swilling would use the preferred line on the restart to get the top spot but Millington would soon pull to his inside. The pair would battle side by side for the final laps with Millington finally able to nose ahead as he came off of turn four of the final lap and grab another victory at America’s Most Famous Short Track. Swilling would come across in 2nd with Hickory Motor Speedway points leader Jacob Heather in the #95 in 3rd. Glasson would finish 4th while Mike Darne in the #21 would make a visit and finish 5th.

Next up would see the Carolina Custom Golf Cart 4-Cylinders hit the track for 25 action packed laps. Brian Mundy in the #6 would lead qualifying and start from the point with Dennis Ward in the #25 to his outside. As the green flag would fall Hickory Motor Speedway points leader Mundy would have mechanical issues and slow on the front stretch. Mundy would make it to the pits and however he was done for the night. Ward would pull out to a commanding lead as the battle for second would be a three way affair between Robert Trivette in the #11, Cody Combs in the #9, and Allison Houston in the #29. Ward would drive on to the victory with Houston finishing 2nd. Robert Trivette would finish 3rd, Cody Combs in the #9 would finish 4th, and Rodney Trivette in the #93 would finishing 5th.

The Cosmo Motors Street Stocks would hit the track next for 30 laps of racing. Mark Whitten in the #77 would turn the fast lap in qualifying and start from the top spot with last week’s winner, Gary Ledbetter in the #32 to his outside. Whitten and Ledbetter would battle side by side for several laps before Ledbetter would finally nose ahead. Ledbetter would drive on for the win with a hard charging Whitten finishing 2nd. Troy DeMarmels in the #18 would grab 3rd, Jared Broadbent in the #74 would finish 4th, and Trey Buff in the #69 would round out the top 5.

Rolling off next would see the One Design Super Trucks lining up to do battle for 35 laps. The #13 of Dakota Slagle would pace qualifying and start from the pole position with the #51 of Allen Huffman to his outside. Slagle and Huffman would duel side by side for several laps before Huffman would eventually pull into the lead. Slagle would tuck in to Huffman’s tire tracks and stay close for the entire race. Sheflon Clay in the #15 would start shotgun on the field after mechanical problems would cause him to miss qualifying but he would charge through the field and spin late in the race while attempting to make a pass for second place. Huffman would survive several restarts to hang on for the win. Slagle would finish 2nd with Joey Shuryan in the #30 close behind finishing 3rd. Charlie Neill in the #26 would come home in 4th with Sheflon Clay in the #15 finishing 5th.

The Paramount Auto Group Limited Late Models would be the next to hit the track for their 35 lap feature. Vince Midas in the #14 would grab his first pole position and start from the top spot with last week’s winner, Gage Painter in the #12 to his outside. The #34 of Pat Rachels would start inside of row two with Taylor Gray in the #15 to his outside. Midas and Painter would have a spirited battle for the initial lead, but Midas would nose ahead with Painter settling in second. Battles would rage throughout the field over the laps but everyone would keep their cool and their cars moving in the right direction, until lap 33 when a spin would bring out the caution with two laps remaining setting up a green-white-checkered restart. Midas would get the jump and lead the final two laps to grab his first Hickory Motor Speedway victory. Rachels would make a move around for 2nd while Painter would have a good finish of 3rd. Dylon Wilson in the #4 would move back up to finish 4th and Chase Janes in the #47 would round out the top 5.

The Renegades would roll off next for their 20 lap fracas. Justin Austin in the #1 would set fast time and start from the top spot with the #51 of Robbie Hollifield to his outside. Austin would jump to the early lead but quickly develop mechanical issues and pull down pit road under caution. Austin would rejoin the field at the rear of the pack with Hollifield at the point. Kyle DiVanna in the #71, David Hasson in the #83, and Austin would all start working their way back through the field setting up a great finish. Hasson and Austin would battle side by side for the last 7 laps with Austin grabbing win #5 on the year as the checkered flag flew. Hasson finished 2nd, DiVanna would take 3rd, Kenneth Roberts in the #8 would finish 4th, and Brian Larkin in the #7 would round out the top 5 in 5th.

The NASCAR Whelen All American Series Late Models would conclude their doubleheader with race number two rolling off for another slugfest. With the invert from the finishing order of race one Bob Saville in the #8 would start from the top spot with Kevin Leicht in the #25 to his outside. As the green flag fell patience would be in short supply as third place starter Landon Huffman in the #75 would take the front row three wide down the backstretch on the first lap of the 40 lap feature. Unfortunately, one of the trio would never make it back to the line as Saville would land hard into the backstretch wall. On the restart Huffman would take the lead on the first lap and attempt to set sail. First race winner Ryan Millington in the #15 would start deep in the field after the invert and patiently work his way towards the front. Lap 30 Huffman would see the #5 of Cole Glasson and Millington working their way towards the leaders bumper. Millington would make his way around Glasson and with just five laps to go, begin to run down the leader, Huffman. Millington would slip under Huffman to set up a battle for the win that would bring the fans to their feet. Millington would grab the win in a thrilling finish. Huffman would take 2nd with Glasson finishing 3rd. Hickory Motor Speedway points leader Jacob Heafner in the #95 would finish 4th while Annabeth Barnes-Crum in the #12 would finish 5th.

Finishing off the night would be the Smash & Crash Series for 10 laps of motoring mayhem. With the addition of a second tractor tire in turn one to match the previous tire in turn 4 the course would have twice the excitement. After drifting his way around the course on several occasions Matt Fox in the #3F would drive on to take the victory.

Next week will see the NASCASR Whelen All American Series back in action and Round #6 of the Paramount Kia ‘Big 10’ Racing Challenge for the Paramount Auto Group Limited Late Models, Twin 25 lap features for the One Design Super Trucks, Twin 25 Lap features for the Cosmo Motors Street Stocks, and an exciting 100 lap Enduro.

In two weeks fans will get the chance to see a special double header weekend treat, July 6th & 7th, with the Monster Trucks of Destruction and a fireworks show concluding the Saturday night event. Tickets are on sale at the track office or call 828-464-3655.
