Midas Has The Touch

(Newton, NC - July 2, 2018)   Hickory Motor Speedway would is the place to be every Saturday night to see some great racing and the return of an old racing tradition.

The One Design Super Trucks would lead off the night’s festivities with their first 25 lap feature of two scheduled for the night. Dakota Slagle in the #13 would take the pole position in qualifying with the #51 of Allen Huffman starting to his outside. Slagle and Huffman would battle side by side for several laps. Slagle would finally nose ahead and take the lead and bring with him Charlie Neill in the #26, who was charging hard through the field. As usual the One Design Super Trucks put on a furious battle throughout the field for every position. Neill would make the pass for the lead with Slagle close in his tire tracks. When the checkered flag flew it would find Neill as the winner. Slagle had a strong run finishing 2nd while Allen Huffman in the #51 finished 3rd. Sheflon Clay in the #15 would finish 4th and Joey Shuryan in the #30 would round out the top 5 with 5th.

Next up would see the Cosmo Motors Street Stocks hitting the track for their first 25 lap feature of their scheduled doubleheader. Mark Whitten in the #77 would set the hot lap to pace qualifying and Troy DeMarmels in the #18 would be second fastest and start to Whitten’s outside when the initial green flag flew.  Whitten and DeMarmels would have a spirited battle for the top spot and see DeMarmels finally make the pass. Whitten would stay close behind but also receive challenges for the second spot as well. Kevin Eby in the #03 would move around Whitten and give chase to the leader. DeMarmels would prove too strong and hold the top spot until the checkered flag. Eby would come in 2nd with Marshall Sutton finishing 3rd. Whitten would bounce back to finish 4th and Dillon Crouch in the #26 would have an impressive run and come home in 5th.

Round #6 of the Paramount Kia ‘Big 10’ Racing Challenge for the Paramount Auto Group Limited Late Models would roll of next on the night for 50 action packed laps. Vince Midas in the #14 would continue his hot streak of late by grabbing the pole position in qualifying with Gage Painter in the #12 starting to his outside. Midas would take the early lead but face repeated challenges from Painter. Battles would be fought throughout the field but the racing would stay clean. Midas would drive on to the win in and lead flag to flag with no cautions, also getting the opportunity to race with his father Todd Midas in the #50, who would run in his first Paramount Auto Group Limited Late Model feature. Painter would hold on for 2nd with Mason Ludwig in the #12 finishing 3rd. Monty Cox in the #21 would grab 4th and the #44 of Josh Kossek would score another top 5 with 5th.

Returning to the track next for 25 exciting laps in their second race on the night would be the One Design Super Trucks. Charlie Neill in the #26 would start from the pole position with the #13 of Dakota Slagle to his outside. The pair would have a fierce side by side battle for the top spot until a caution would slow the field and contact between the pair would bring them both to pit road for repairs. That would move the #15 of Sheflon Clay and the #51 of Allen Huffman to the front row for the restart. Clay would get the jump on the restart and nose ahead for the lead with Huffman close in tow. Clay would prove too tough on the night and drive on to the win, his second on the year. Huffman would hold off a hard charging Slagle and grab 2nd with Slagle taking 3rd. Neill would battle back for 4th with Joey Shuryan in the #30 would finish 5th.

The Cosmo Motors Street Stocks would hit the track next to close out their doubleheader with another 25 lap battle. Mark Whitten in the #77 would once again start from the top spot with Troy DeMarmels in the #18 to his outside. The front duo would battle furiously and look to settle the battle between themselves until the #21 of Drew Cox would enter into the fray and get by both for the lead. A caution would bunch the field and Cox would nose ahead on the restart. Cox would spin coming off of turn 4, but damage was limited to the #71 of Robert Divanna, and he was able to continue. On the restart Whitten and DeMarmels would revert back to their earlier battle, putting on another side by side battle for the fans. Whitten would eventually nose ahead into the lead and a few laps later DeMarmels would have mechanical troubles and spin as he entered turn 3 and backed hard into the wall. After the next restart Whitten would muscle away and drive on to take the checkered flag. Cox would bounce back and finish 2nd while Jared Broadbent in the #74 would turn his evening around and grab the 3rd finishing spot. Kevin Eby in the #03 would finish 4th and Marshall Sutton in the #64 would round out the top 5 in 5th.

Returning the track after a multi-year hiatus would see an old fan favorite back in action with the running of the Colors Edge 100 lap Enduro. With a field full of 17 truly stock cars the action would start early and not take a break until the checkered flag would fly. Cody Leland in the #19 would start from the point with Dylan Mayes in the #13 and Kenneth Roberts in the #8 also making up the front row. The race would resemble rush hour on Interstate 40 for much of the event but no serious events would mar the race. Leland would capitalize on his starting spot and build a huge early lead, but with endurance being the key with these truly stock cars had he used too much of his car early in the race. Roberts would run in the 2nd position most of the event and would turn up the wick late in the race, but it would turn out to be too little too late as Leland would go on to grab the checkered flag and the winner’s hardware with Roberts finishing runner-up. Tim Steiner in the #53 would finish 3rd, Kendra Hann in the #4H would take 4th, and Angie Cook in the #5 would round out the top 5.
