Mayer, DeMarmels Share the Isaac

(Newton, NC - September 3, 2019)    Hickory Motor Speedway was the epicenter of the the racing universe on Saturday night for the running of the prestigious 43rd Annual Paramount Auto Group Bobby Isaac Memorial honoring one of Catawba County’s motorsport legends.

Leading off the event would be the Carolina Custom Golf Cart Super Trucks and their 50 lap feature. Hickory Motor Speedway points leader Allen Huffman in the #51 would take the top spot in qualifying and start from the point with the #6 of Charlie Watson to his outside. Joey Shuryan in the #30 and Dennis Trivette in the #28 would make up row two. The green flag would see Huffman pull to the early lead with Watson looking to his inside. Watson would make the pass for the lead on lap 3 as Huffman would tuck in close behind. Shuryan would move to take third with Travis Baity in the #70 in fourth. Watson and Huffman would pull slightly ahead as there would be a fierce three way battle for third between Shuryan, Baity, and Trivette. Baity would use the high side to take the spot and bring Trivette with him to fourth. Trivette would move to the high groove with Baity, but couldn’t quite complete the pass as they would continue in third and fourth. Lap 33 would see Shuryan move back around Trivette and set his sights on Baity in third. The caution would fly on lap 40 as Trivette would lose the battle with a handling issue, caused by a flat right rear and spin coming off of turn two. The restart would see Watson and Huffman door to door. Watson would pull to the lead with everyone giving chase. Watson would prove too tough on the night and take the win. Huffman would finish 2nd with Baity finishing 3rd. Shuryan would finish 4th and Trivette would finish 5th.

Next up would see the Paramount Auto Group Limited Late Models hit the track for 50 laps in Round #9 of the Paramount Kia ‘Big 10’ Chase for the Championship. The top two in Hickory Motor Speedway Track points as well as in the Paramount Kia ‘Big 10’ Chase for the Championship would start side by side from the front row with Cody DeMarmels in the #18 grabbing the top spot and Josh Kossek in the #44 to his outside. Row two would be made up of Mason Ludwig in the #12 and Brendan Doyle in the #23. The start would see the front row battle hard with Kossek nosing ahead for the top spot. DeMarmels wouldn’t be content with second and continue to press for the lead until he would make the pass on lap 8. Ludwig would watch the battle closely awaiting his opportunity to move up from third. Ryan Rackley in the #1 would move up to the fourth position. Mitch Walker in the #43, who would be pulling double duty on the night, would drive up to fifth. DeMarmels would set a blistering pace up front but second place would see a three way battle between Kossek, Ludwig, and Rackley. Ludwig would take the spot on lap 35 and set his sights on DeMarmels. Rackley would move around Kossek on lap 41 for third. Lap 45 would see Rackley move around Ludwig for second and look for one more spot. But DeMarmels would be too strong and drive on to the win and extend his points lead. Rackley would be one of the fastest cars on the track and finish 2nd with Ludwig finishing 3rd. Walker would work his way up to 4th and Kossek would fade back to 5th after starting to trail a stream of smoke with around 10 laps to go.

Hitting the track next would be the Hickory Vintage Racing Series rolling off next for 25 laps. Bill Webb in the #16 would grab the pole position with Bill Powell in the #71 starting second. Bill Webb and Powell would battle door to door for the top spot with Bill Webb pulling to the lead on lap 3. Powell would face a fierce challenge from Mackie Webb in the #16W and Robert Webb in the #6. Bill Webb would drive on to the win and lengthen his points lead. Powell would finish 2nd, Mackie Webb would finish 3rd, and Robert Webb would finish 4th.

The NASCAR Whalen All-American Series would roll off next for 150 action packed laps in the 43rd running of the Paramount Auto Group Bobby Isaac Memorial. After a blistering fast time trial session Ryan Repko in the #71 would take the top spot in qualifying with Austin McDaniel in the #12 starting to his outside deciced by just .0003 (3 ten thousandths of a second). Adam Lemke in the #98 and Justin Carroll in the #57 would make up row two for the start. The leaders would go side by side for several laps until Repko would finally pull ahead. Lemke and Carroll would stay door to door through lap 10. Lemke would make a high side power move to get around Carroll and draw even with McDaniel for second. Lap 13 would see Lemke complete the pass and begin to give chase to Repko. Carroll would look to the inside of McDaniel for several laps before settling in close behind in his tire tracks. Lap 25 would see the caution fly with a huge amount of smoke trailing behind the Hickory Motor Speedway points leader and Division One North Carolina State leader Thomas Beane in the #31. Beane would pull to the pits, losing multiple laps under caution, while Beane and the crew thrashed on repairs. The Beane team would complete repairs and return on lap 35 during track cleanup. After several laps Beane would pull back to the pits and park his Ford for the night. Repko and Lemke would make up the front row for the restart. Lemke would use the same high side move he used earlier in the night to move around Repko for the top spot. Carroll, Watson, and Mayer would follow Lemke around Repko and look for the top spot. Lap 54 would see a Watson make a move and take the lead and bring Mayer with him to second. Lemke and Carroll would go back to their familiar side by side battle for third. Watson and Mayer would duel it out for the top spot until lap 65 when Mayer would complete the pass. Lemke would also look under Watson for position and try to keep up with his JR Motorsports teammate. Lap 71 would see teammates Mayer and Lemke battle side by side for the top spot. Lemke would complete the pass for the lead on lap 74, however his car would drastically slow just one lap later on lap 75, creeping back to the pits and ending his run for the win. Mayer would move back to the top spot with Watson giving close chase. Carroll, Repko, and Matt Leicht in the #2 would all look to run down the leaders and give battle for the win. Leicht would make a late race run and move up to fourth after getting by Repko. Mayer would pull away at the end of the race and drive on to the victory. Watson would hang on for a hard fought 2nd with Carroll finishing 3rd. Repko would move back around Leicht to finish 4th while Leicht would finish 5th.

The always exciting Street Stocks would close out the evening’s festivities with their 30 lap battle. Jesse Clark in the #5 would start from the top spot with Jeff Sparks in the #7 to his outside. Drew Cox in the #21 and Kevin Eby in the #03 would make up row two. Sparks would get the jump on the start and move to the top spot with Clark close behind. Cox would work his way around Clark for the second spot. The caution would fly on lap 9 as a fire would erupt under the rear of the #31 of Derek Fowler as he was at making a pass. The green flag would see Sparks and Cox up front. Sparks would drive back out to the lead with Cox, Sparks, and Eby all in tow. Ethan Johnson in the #2 and Marshall Sutton in the #64 would have a spirited battle for the fifth position. Lap 24 would see the caution fly as the #69 of Trey Buff would spin to avoid making contact with the #77 of Wayne Edwards as they dove down into turn one. The restart would see Sparks and Cox pacing the field once again. Sparks would take the top spot with Cox pressuring him. Cox would go high in turns three and four, but suddenly slow as something was amiss mechanically. Cox would limp around the track over the final laps and would not be a factor in the race for the win. Sparks would lead the field coming to the flag with 6 laps to go and also experience mechanical issues on the backstretch. Sparks would pull to the pits and end his chance at victory. Eby would jump to the lead with Clark giving chase. Eby would drive on to the win. Clark would finish 2nd and Sutton would move up to 3rd. Buff would bounce back to finish 4th and Johnson would finish 5th.

The NASCAR Whelen All American Series will be back in action next week for Gaston Rentals Night at the Races and a big night of racing. And in two weeks the regular season will come to an end on NAPA Championship Night presented by Pull-A-Part with all divisions in action.
