Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Heads to South Carolina and Tennessee This Weekend
(WAYCROSS, GA - June 19, 2014) - The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will compete in two different states this weekend, visiting South Carolina and Tennessee for two big events. The LOLMDS will visit Cherokee Speedway in Gaffney, SC on Friday night, June 20th for a one day show at the historic speed plant for the Annual "Grassy Smith Memorial". Then on Saturday night, June 21st the series will make its first ever visit to the Smoky Mountain Speedway in Maryville, TN for the "Lucas Oil Ole Smoky Moonshine Classic" - Presented by Ole Smoky Tennessee Moonshine. Both events will include Miller Welders Time Trials, Heat Races, B-Mains and a 50-Lap feature event, paying $10,000 to win for the stars and cars of the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series.
Chris Madden of Gray Court, SC is the defending "Grassy Smith Memorial" race champion and will again be entered in this year's event. Support classes at Cherokee Speedway on Friday night include: Crate Late Models, Crate Sportsman, Stock 4 and Young Guns RWD. Cherokee Speedway Pit Gates will open at 2 PM, Grandstands will open at 4 PM with racing action getting underway at 7:30 PM. A strong contingent of regional and local racers are expected to battle with the stars of the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series this weekend. Support classes at Smoky Mountain Speedway on Saturday night include Crate Late Models and Street Stocks. Pit gates open at 12 Noon, Grandstands and Tier Parking opens at 3 PM with racing action getting underway at 7:30 PM. Don O'Neal, coming off another big win this past weekend on the tour, will lead the LOLMDS stars into this weekend's event with a slim lead in the series championship point standings over three-time and reigning LOLMDS National Champion, Jimmy Owens. Scott Bloomquist has climbed up to third in the chase for the LOLMDS National Championship, followed by Earl Pearson Jr., Steve Francis, Eddie Carrier Jr., John Blankenship, Jared Landers, Dennis Erb Jr., and Jason Hughes rounds out the top ten in the series championship point standings.
Jason Hughes holds a slim lead over Jason Papich in the chase for the 2014 Dunn-Benson Rookie of the Year title. Both rookie drivers continue to improve each week, as they compete at new tracks for the first time this year on the series.
