“Carroll and Beane Split Twins”

(Newton, NC - June 12, 2018)    Racing returned to America’s Most Famous Short Track Saturday night as the rain gave way to some awesome action-packed racing.

Leading off the night would be the NASCAR Whelen All American Series Late Models for 40 laps in the first race of their doubleheader on the night. Thomas Beane in the #31 would make the most out of his visit to the Birthplace of the NASCAR Stars and grab the pole position with the #57 of Justin Carroll starting to his outside. Evan Swilling in the #18 and Monty Cox in the #21 would make up row 2 for the start. Beane would take the early lead and hold it for several laps as Carroll and Swilling would battle for second. A caution at lap 26 would bunch the field and set the tone for an exciting finish. Beane and Swilling would battle side by side for several laps. Carroll would peek inside the lead pair several times but would think better of it until the inside would finally open once again and the race would become three wide for the top spot. The three-way battle raged for several laps until Carroll would finally nose ahead and Annabeth Barnes-Crum in the #12 would enter the battle. Shortly thereafter a caution would fly with cars spinning and see Beane, Swilling, and Jacob Heafner in the #95 involved. Carroll would get the best out of the restart and would drive on to the victory. Barnes-Crum would finish 2nd while Heafner would bounce back and finish with a 3rd. Nolan Pope in the #1 and Swilling would round out the top five with 4th and 5th respectively.

Next up would see the Carolinas Custom Golf Cart 4-Cylinders hit the track for another exciting 25 lap feature. Hickory Motor Speedway 4-Cylinder points leader Brian Mundy in the #6 would set the fast time in qualifying with Dennis Ward in the #25 to his outside. Mundy would get the early lead while Ward and Dennis Trivette in the #28 would scuffle for second. Trivette would move around Ward and look to catch the leader, but Mundy had built a nice lead and would knock off consistently fast laps one by one till he took the checkered flag for his second Hickory Motor Speedway win. Dennis Trivette would finish 2nd with Ward finishing 3rd. Robert Trivette in the #11 would grab 4th and Cody Combs in the #9 would finish 5th.

The Cosmo Motors Street Stocks would roll off next for 30 laps of battle. Jeff Sparks in the #7 would lead the division in qualifying with Mark Whitten in the #77 starting to his outside. Sparks jumped to the early lead with Whitten giving chase in second. Battles would rage throughout the field with multi-time track champion Kevin Eby in the #03 and Hickory Motor Speedway points leader Marshall Sutton in the #64 both looking to work their way to the front. Sparks would prove too tough on the night and grab the win with Whitten holding on for 2nd. A great battle would ensue for 3rd as Jared Broadbent in the #74 and the #18 of Troy DeMarmels would battle the last lap side by side and come off turn four sideways to the checkered flag. Broadbent would take 3rd, DeMarmels would get 4th, and Eby would finish 5th.

Roaring to life next would be the One Design Super Trucks for 35 laps. The #13 of Dakota Slagle would grab the top spot in qualifying while Sheflon Clay in the #15 would start from the second spot. Slagle would grab the top spot on the backstretch on lap number one but Clay would do a crossover move and get to his inside coming off of turn four. The pair would battle side by side for several laps until Slagle would finally move back to the point. The battle would be behind the leaders for the next 20 laps until a caution would slow the race and bring Allen Huffman in the #51 to pit road. The restart would see Clay move around Slagle for the top spot and bring the rest of the field into the mix. After several spins and multiple cautions the final restart would occur on lap 31 and see Clay move back to the front around Huffman. Slagle would give chase and have the #26 of Charlie Neill and the #30 of Joey Shuryan close behind. Clay would hold on and lead the final laps and grab another Hickory Motor Speedway victory. Huffman would finish 2nd with Slagle in 3rd close behind. Neill and Shuryan would round out the top five.

The Paramount Auto Group Limited Late Models would be next to hit the historic 3/8 mile oval for 35 laps. Pat Rachels in the #34 would pace the field with fast time in qualifying with the #14 of Vince Midas to his outside. Rachels would move to the early lead and pace the field for the first 10 laps. Midas would look inside the veteran and make his move to the top spot on lap 12. The #4 of Dylon Wilson and the #18 of Cody DeMarmels would make their way towards the lead duo just before the caution would fly on lap 16. Midas would get the lead on the restart and look to stretch his lead, but the caution would soon fly slowing the field once again. On the next restart Midas would start to accelerate, then slow as mechanical issues would plague the car and put an end to the young wheelman’s night. Wilson would gladly take advantage of the situation and move to the top spot and try to distance himself from the field. Cautions would fly again and bunch the field. DeMarmels, Rachels, and the #44 of Josh Kossek would pull close to Wilson and give challenge for the win. Wilson would drive on for the win, and celebrate in victory lane. A three way skirmish would ensue coming to the checkers and see Kossek, who was running second, spin while DeMarmels would finish 2nd and Rachels would grab 3rd. Gage Painter in the #12 would come home in 4th and Taylor Gray in the #15 would battle back from an early pit stop and on track incident to finish 5th.

The Renegades would roll off next for their 25 lap slugfest. Robbie Hollifield in the #51 would start from the top spot with David Hasson in the #83 to his outside. Hollifield’s car wouldn’t fire as the cars rolled off pit road and he would be relegated to the rear of the field for the start after repairs were made. Hasson would take the early lead and get challenged by the #71 of 2017 Hickory Motor Speedway Track Champion Kyle DiVanna. Justin Austin in the #1 would be the car to watch as he sliced his way to the front after starting towards the rear. Austin would move to the front of the pack and drive on to take the emotional win in a car bearing his father’s image in the numbers on the side of the car. DiVanna would grab 2nd with Hasson sliding in 3rd. Hollifield would battle back for 4th while the #7 of Brian Larkin would finish 5th.

Hitting the track for the second portion of their doubleheader 40 lap feature would be the NASCAR Whelen All American Series Late Models. Thomas Beane in the #31, who would lead a portion of race #1 after starting from the pole position, would start from the top spot once again, but this time after the invert from the finishing order of race one. The #99 of Matt Elledge would start to his outside. Beane would jump to the early lead and try to make the best of his preferred position. First race winner, Justin Carroll in the #57, would start from eighth and try to work to the front and dice his way through the competitive field. The #18 of Evan Swilling would also be looking for redemption after a race one spin would take him out of contention for the win. Beane would stay out front early and often and prove that his first performance was no fluke. Despite valiant efforts throughout the field Beane would prove too tough on the night and lead the race from flag to flag, grabbing his first Hickory Motor Speedway premier division victory. Swilling would battle back to 2nd place with Hickory Motor Speedway Late Model points leader Jacob Heafner in the #95 finishing 3rd. Carroll would battle all the way back to 4th with Annabeth Barnes-Crum posting another good finish with 5th.

Closing out the night would be the Smash & Crash Series. Once again controlled chaos and mayhem would be the tone for the event. The tractor tire would make an appearance and be the focal point for a great deal of the action. While this definitely wouldn’t be mistaken for the old powder puff derbys, ladies would rule the night and have a battle for the top spot. Angie Cook in the #17 would grab the win with Kendra Hann finishing 2nd.

Next week will see the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series back in action with 321 Lawnmower Night at the Races presented by Whelen.

Coming up in 4 short weeks will be a Hickory Motor Speedway first with the Monster Trucks of Destruction on two consecutive nights, July 6th & 7th. Call the track to get your tickets at 828-464-3655.
